“Ay Willie deja de ser tan negativo”
by Willie Colón on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:24pm
Algunos me mandan a callar. XD

ROBERT DeBELLIS’s Obituary by New York Times

This man was like a father to me. I am alive today because of Dr. Bob DeBellis. I am heartbroken to find out today that he had passed away while I was out of the country. He was a true renaissance man. Physician, sailor, musician, comedian. I will miss the man who took care of me from my late teens to a few weeks ago.

SPANISH SURNAMES Good to learn…
The Real Academy of the Spanish Language informs us: The suffix EZ at the end of the Hispanic surnames comes from a Hebrew root sefardí and has the connotation of “SON OF”. Last names that are so familiar and reconized as Spanish as Álvarez, means Álvaro’s son; Rodriguez, Rodrigo’s son; González, Gonzalo’s son; Martínez, Martín’s son; Hernández, Hernando’s son. The only grammatical exception that exists to this rule is in Chávez’case, who is a SOB, and by no means could he be the son of El Chavo.. :S

Obama Honors CIA, Intelligence Community for Bin Laden Killing
By Roger Runningen - May 20, 2011 3:25 PM ETFri May 20 19:25:54 GMT 2011
President Barack Obama thanked the spies and analysts of the Central Intelligence Agency today for their persistence in helping U.S. forces track down Osama bin Laden and vowed to pursue every lead they develop from a trove of documents and computer files taken during the operation.
The intelligence operation that led to bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan will be studied for “generations to come,” the president said at agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia, outside Washington.
“As you go about your work with incredible diligence and dedication every single day, I hope all of you understand how important it is, how grateful I am and that you have the thanks of a grateful nation,” he said.
Obama told the CIA employees that their work didn’t end with the death of bin Laden. The intelligence material taken by the Navy SEALs when they left the terrorist leader’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan is “the largest trove” of information ever seized from a terrorist leader.
“Today, every terrorist in the al-Qaeda network should be watching their back,” Obama said. “We are going to pursue every lead.”
The CIA in August 2010 located the residence of a member of bin Laden’s inner circle, who served as one of his few trusted couriers. A month later, the agency showed Obama secret assessments that indicated bin Laden may be in the high-security compound, because the custom construction suggested someone of significance.
The detective work set in motion a series of clandestine actions that led to Obama’s April 29 authorization to conduct a raid. “We gave President Obama and his team accurate, relevant, timely intelligence,” CIA Director Leon Panetta said in a May 2 statement.
Panetta has already praised the agency’s counter-terrorism center and the Office of South Asia Analysis for their expertise, creativity and tradecraft in tracing bin Laden to a safe house in Pakistan, and for the SEAL strike team.
Panetta, 72, has been nominated as the next U.S. defense secretary.

West: Obama ‘a black mascot’ and ‘black puppet’ - Political Intelligence - A national political and campaign blog from The Boston Globe - Boston.com

Cornel West, shown speaking last year in Martin Luther King Jr.’s former church, labeled President Obama ‘a black mascot’ and ‘black puppet’ during an interview.
By Matt Viser, Globe Staff
Cornel West, a Princeton University professor and leading black intellectual, is harshly criticizing President Obama, a candidate he once supported but now calls “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.”
West, a former Harvard University professor, said during an interview with the website Truthdig posted yesterday that the president has not been true to his race.
“I think my dear brother Barack Obama has a certain fear of free black men,” West said. “It’s understandable. As a young brother who grows up in a white context, brilliant African father, he’s always had to fear being a white man with black skin. All he has known culturally is white…When he meets an independent black brother, it is frightening.”
The White House did not have an immediate comment. West did not respond to messages left at his office.
Republicans have questioned Obama’s origins — to the point where he felt compelled to release his long-form birth certificate to prove he was born in Hawaii — but West also uses Obama’s past to draw into question the president’s racial bearings.
“Obama, coming out of Kansas influence, white, loving grandparents, coming out of Hawaii and Indonesia, when he meets these independent black folk who have a history of slavery, Jim Crow, Jane Crow and so on, he is very apprehensive,” West said. “He has a certain rootlessness, a deracination. It is understandable.”
West is a professor at Princeton’s Center for African American Studies and is the author of "Race Matters." He was a professor at Harvard, but left in 2002 amid quarrels with then-president Lawrence Summers.
West also recounts personal slights — that his phone calls didn’t get returned, and that he couldn’t get a ticket with his mother and brother to the inauguration.
It is not the first time West has raised questions about Obama. Last year, during an interview with NPR, he said he wished the president were more “Martin Luther King-like.”

Nissan Is Named New York City Taxi of Tomorrow, Beating Out Ford and Karsan
By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM

A rendering of the new New York City taxi designed by Nissan.
From our colleagues at City Room:
New York City’s new taxicab will be a bulky, traditional van manufactured by Nissan — with no moonroof included.
The Nissan NV200 van, a light commercial vehicle already in use in Asian and European markets, has won the city’s Taxi of Tomorrow competition, according to a city official told of the decision. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is set to announce the decision on Tuesday.
The choice of the Nissan represents something of a culture shock to New Yorkers more accustomed to a traditional sedan made by an American manufacturer.
The Nissan model, which can potentially be converted to an all-electric engine, beat out contenders from Karsan, a Turkish company that submitted a stylish, amenity-laden design, and Ford, which builds the fleet’s current mainstay, the venerable Crown Victoria.
